Celebrating rangatahi success

Celebrating rangatahi success

InZone rangatahi Georgina Broughton-Kake and Puspa Barua spent their July holidays completing the GirlBoss Edge: Law, Policy and Government Programme. Both girls were awarded sponsored places in the 10-day programme alongside participants largely comprising of university students. It was a wonderful opportunity to develop their rangatiratanga (leadership) skills.

Each day included a one-hour live session with a different guest speaker and was for the girls, their favourite part. They heard the inspirational stories of accomplished women who they could relate to and who had similar backgrounds to them. Mentors included the first Pasifika President of Law Society Tiana Epati, Dr Hinemoana Elder and Young New Zealander of the Year Rez Gardi.

For Georgina, a hugely valuable aspect was the career accelorator modules on personal branding, networking, interviewing and LinkedIn. She felt learning these skills stood her in good stead for finding work later in life.

As the programme was completed online, the girls all formed a Facebook group through which they introduced themselves and keep in touch. They plan to meet in person soon, something the girls are looking forward to as they have made a lot of friends.

“I’m really glad I did it” says Georgina, who learned about the programme through InZone Academic and Pathways Manager Joy Williams.

Kia pai mai hoki!
